CHATHAM PLAYHOUSE TO HOST 17th ANNUAL JERSEY VOICES FESTIVAL STARTING JULY 29th.

Evening of one-act plays enables writers to showcase original scripts, while allowing directors and actors to experiment with new roles

The Chatham Community Players (CCP) will host its 17th annual Jersey Voices One-Act Festival with five performances between July 29 and August 6. This year’s production will include five original short plays written by New Jersey playwrights, as well as one original dance piece.

"I’m constantly amazed and excited by the creativity, the resilience, the persistence of the Playwrights of New Jersey whose plays we get to present every summer. CABARET Book by Joe Masteroff; Music by John Kander; Lyrics by Fred Ebb

May 4, 6, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8pm and May 13 at 3pm  (2012)

Directed by Jeffrey Fiorello

“Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!”  Set in Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany, Cabaret invites audiences into the depths of Berlin’s Kit Kat Klub. The story follows the life of the club’s headlining singer, Sally Bowles, her relationship with a young American writer, and the unfolding of dark events that encompass Berlin. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies, who serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany.

“Life is a cabaret, old chum…come to the cabaret!”

BUG by Tracy Letts

Oct 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8pm and Oct 23 at 3pm (2011)

Directed by Bob Pridham

Image From the playwright who wrote “AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, Tracy Letts’ BUG centers on Agnes, a lonely, middle-aged waitress victimized by her abusive ex-husband, and tortured by the kidnapping of her child in a supermarket almost ten years ago.  After spiraling into a world of alcohol, cocaine, and seedy motel rooms, Peter a timid Gulf War veteran and drifter in search of a friend wanders into her life.  As their interest in each other grows, so does their paranoid obsession with understanding what –or who –  brought them together.  Did we mention the infestation of bugs?

This play is shocking, raw and fun in its insanity

GRAPES OF WRATH by Frank Galati, from the novel by John Steinbeck

March 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 8pm and March 11 at 3pm  (2012)

Directed by Frank Licato

A powerful and deeply affecting stage version of one of the masterpieces of American literature. Holding to the simplicity and directness of the original novel, the play uses the sparest of technical means to convey its timeless message of the persistence and strength of the human spirit as it battles against the adversities of nature and an uncaring society.

"…majestic…leaves one feeling that the generosity of spirit he saw in a brutal country is not so much lost as waiting once more to be found." —NY Times.

"This is, overall, a thrilling theatrical achievement that gets its power from the still sharp relevance of its human message…" —NY Post.

"THE GRAPES OF WRATH is a lesson in history, stagecraft, and truth that we cannot afford not to learn." —NY Magazine.
